ROSS TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT

Ross Township, located in Butler County, is accepting applications for the position of full-time fire chief. Ross Township is situated near the cities of Hamilton, Fairfield, Oxford, and north of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The township service area is characterized as township and village communities with a “rural feel” consisting of residential areas on large lots, open green spaces, wooded areas, and farm land. There are also several large residential subdivisions, and commercial and retail properties in the township.

The Ross Township Fire Department is a combination staffed agency with seven full-time and approximately 40 part-time personnel that provide fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS), and community risk reduction to a citizen population of approximately 8,736 in a 30.98 square mile service area. The fire department operates from two fire stations with three pumping engines with one in reserve, two water tanker/tenders, one wildland firefighting vehicle, three advanced life support ambulances with one in reserve, one inflatable rescue boat, and one fire/rescue utility all-terrain vehicle.

The position of fire chief is a direct report to the Ross Township administrator. This highly visible position requires an energetic, self-motivated individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to foster a strong team environment. Successful candidates must have experience in planning, possess astute financial management skills, and have a broad background in all aspects of service delivery including EMS, fire suppression, incident management, community risk reduction (i.e., fire prevention, inspection and code enforcement, and public education), and personnel management.

Requirements include a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible full-time fire service experience with a local, state, or federal fire department agency, including five years of documented supervisory experience and/or administrative responsibility at the rank of shift commander (i.e., rank of captain or higher). The following State of Ohio certifications and licensure requirements include: Firefighter II, Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic, Fire-Safety Inspector, Fire and/or EMS Instructor and a valid State of Ohio Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with a good driving record. Graduation with a bachelor's degree is required from an accredited college/university with a concentration in fire science, public administration, or a subject field related to the position. Executive development requirements consist of successful completion of the Ohio Fire Executive Program or National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program. Completion of Fire Officer I and II and the National Incident Management Systems’ 700, 800, 100, 200, 300, and 400 training are also required. Preferred certifications, education, and training include any or all the following: Fire Officer III and IV and additional college-level course work towards an attempt to obtain a master's degree.

The successful applicant must be in good physical condition and have the ability to pass all pre-employment screenings including physical examination and drug screening. Starting salary for this position is $92,000, with a $5,000 increase at the successful completion of six months, and an additional $5,000 increase at the successful completion of 12 months. All health, life, vision, and dental insurance paid by the township; take-home vehicle and cell phone are provided.
