Assistant Fire Chief

Responsibilities This is a multi-incumbent position that provides administrative and technical assistance as a principal assistant to the Deputy Director of Fire and the Director and Chief of Fire. Assistant Fire Chiefs within the Dayton Fire Department manage a Fire Department division and are expected to develop and manage a budget in their assigned division. The Assistant Chiefs assist in developing and implementing laws and regulations governing public safety and Fire/EMS/Rescue protection for the City. The incumbents work with the Deputy Director of Fire and the Director and Chief of Fire to develop departmental goals, objectives and performance measures. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; and rewarding and disciplining employees.

Minimum Qualifications Associate’s Degree from an accredited college AND 10 years of experience as a company officer or greater; a Bachelor’s Degree must be obtained within 4 years of appointment. A Bachelor’s or Master's Degree is preferred with an Executive Fire Officer (EFO) and/or Chief Fire Officer (CFO) credential being highly desired. A Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business or Fire Sciences can be substituted for 2 years of experience as a company officer or greater or documented assignment experience whereas the candidate has performed and developed a skill set like/similar to that of an Assistant Chief. This skill set may include, but not be limited to, budgeting, finance, payroll, apparatus specification writing, grant writing, facilities and apparatus maintenance, and procurement processes. Furthermore, these skill sets may evolve from staff positions managing health and safety, training, support services, and/or resource management relevant to fire department operations. This position requires a seasoned veteran who has moved progressively through fire management positions. The best candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership, management, technical and team skills. Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.

License Requirements Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment. Special Requirements Within 6 months of appointment, all candidates must obtain and maintain current state and department mandated Emergency Medical Technician and Firefighter certifications.

Salary $108,555.20 - $150,820.80 per year
