Plain Township Fire Department

Plain Township was founded in 1810 and is located in the northeast corner of Franklin County. The City of New Albany within Franklin County is located within the Township. The total population is over 13,000 and doubles in size during the daytime. Plain Township is home to the campus of New Albany Plain Local Schools with 5,500 students and staff. Plain Township is home to Abercrombie & Fitch, Justice Brands, Mount Carmel Surgical Hospital, and Rocky Fork Metro Park. The Township is governed by an elected board of trustees and an elected fiscal officer. Day-to-day operations are managed by a township administrator and professional fire chief. Plain Township:

  • Receives 3,000 calls annually – 68 percent are EMS calls.
  • Conducts nearly 800 fire code compliance inspections annually.
  • Employs 39 full-time and 20 part-time professional firefighters.
  • 100% percent of full-time firefighters are certified paramedics.
  • Obtained an ISO rating of 2 in 2018.
  • Average response time is 5 minutes or less within Plain Township.
  • We protect $3.5 billion in real estate assets in New Albany and unincorporated areas.

The fire department consists of the fire chief, an assistant fire chief, fire marshal, fire inspector, EMS coordinator,  battalion chiefs, captains, lieutenants, firefighters, and an administrative coordinator.

The Opportunity:

The Fire Marshal is a highly visible position in the community and interacts with the New Albany economic development team and building officials. The Fire Marshal supervises the prevention bureau which is responsible for inspecting existing structures, buildings, construction and remodel sites to ensure fire code compliance; reviewing building plans and buildings under construction, issues permits, warnings and citations, and participates with public safety education and other duties using superb community engagement skills promoting positive collaboration and teamwork with the community.

The Ideal Candidate:

The Township is seeking a professional, engaging, and experienced Fire Marshal who is passionate about public service, fire safety prevention, and the fire code. The Fire Marshal leads a prevention team that collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to public safety in the community. The Fire Marshal will be responsible for building plan review, code compliance, safety education, sprinkler, and other suppression systems and investigating fires within the township. The Fire Marshal ensures the safety of the community and ensures information is accurate and timely. The Fire Marshal will have experience reviewing and interpreting building plans and suppression systems, experience with state and local fire code compliance, fire investigations, and has the ability to develop professional working relationships with the City of New Albany and local businesses. Ideally, the Fire Marshal will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university; however, an Associate’s Degree in fire science or a related field is acceptable.

Additionally, the Fire Marshal position requires:

  • ODPS Firefighter II and EMT-Paramedic
  • ODPS Fire Safety Inspector
  • Fire Investigations Level I and II
  • Fire Officer I Program
  • Valid State of Ohio driver’s license with good driving record
  • ODPS Fire Instructor (preferred)
  • NIMS ICS certification: 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 (preferred)

Compensation and Benefits:

The Fire Marshal is an exempt position with a minimum starting salary of $102,564 with a full 12.25% pension pickup of $12,563 for total compensation of $115,129. The maximum pay is $115,294 with a full 12.25% pension pickup of $14,125 for total compensation of $129,417. This position is eligible to earn compensatory time off. The Township’s benefit package includes Township paid medical, dental, vision, Life and AD&D insurance plans plus Short-Term Disability. Our High Deductible Healthcare Plan comes with a funded Health Reimbursement Arrangement. Employees are only responsible for prescription copays and earning the first $1,000 of the HRA through a township wellness program. The Township offers both a 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and a Roth 457 Compensation Plan. As a public employer, the Fire Marshal will participate with the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund, receive paid sick leave, vacation time as well as a flexible schedule.
